Chairman of the Ogun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Comrade Wale Olanrewaju has described the tireless efforts of Nigerian journalists to uphold ethics of journalism, especially in the face of significant challenges to press freedom, as being instrumental in shaping public discourse, promoting democracy, and ensuring transparency in governance.
Comrade Olanrewaju said this while extending his heartfelt commendations to all journalists in Ogun State and across Nigeria on the momentous occasion of 70th anniversary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ.
He said the momentous occasion is to honour the unwavering dedication, resilience, and integrity that Ogun journalists and their counterparts in the country have demonstrated throughout the decades, commending them for playing a pivotal role in keeping the public informed and engaged with critical events in the society. He maintained that their commitment to truth, accuracy, and responsible reporting has served as a cornerstone for the advancement of our democratic values.
"As we celebrate this significant milestone of 70th anniversary of our noble Union, it is crucial to acknowledge the dedication to truth, commitment to crucial components of responsible journalism, contribution to social and political development of our dear State, without ignoring the strength and solidarity existing within the journalism community, which have remained essential in tackling modern challenges facing the media industry. The unity within the NUJ has enabled us to champion the rights of journalists and advocate for the principles that define our profession" Olanrewaju said.
He commended Ogun journalists for being the backbone of journalism, upholding the ethics of the profession, adhering to code of conduct and principle of professionalism, and as well promoting amity among themselves.
While reiterating his dedication to further lead by example, and fostering an environment where impactful journalism can thrive, the Council Chairman emphasized the continued need to uphold the ideals of integrity and professionalism in the profession at all times, ensuring that the legacy of responsible journalism endures.
He affirmed that unity within the union would tackle the pressing issues affecting the media industry and champion the rights of journalists towards more years of impactful journalism that promotes transparency and accountability in governance.
