Natasha Vs Akpabio: Be Patient With Us, Senate Begs Nigerians

The leadership of the Nigerian Senate has called for patience among Nigerians following the brawl between the Senator Representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.

Speaking on Arise TV on Wednesday, March 5, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, Neda Imasuen said it is important that Nigerians exercise patience and allow the Upper Chamber carry out its role on the matter.

Recall that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan went berserk on the floor of the Senate last week following the reassignment of seats.

Akpoti-Uduaghan while rejecting the decision of the Senate leadership to reassign seats to lawmakers, later alleged that she was being intimidated and undermined by the Senate President.

While speaking during an interview with Arise TV, the Kogi lawmaker alleged that she has been sexually harassed on multiple occasions by the Senate President.

However, speaking on the issue before the Senate committee on ethics, Imasuen said seat are re-allocated to lawmakers at will.

According to him, anything or circumstances can lead to the re-assignment of seats by the Senate leadership.

Also dismissing claims or gender discrimination in the Red Chamber, Imasuen said the Senate President does not single out female senators for unfair treatment.

“There are four female senators in this Assembly, and I will tell you straight up that I am very close to at least three of them. I sit next to Senator Ireti Kingibe, and I consider her a friend.

“The issue in question does not concern sexual harassment. It is a matter of privilege, and I do not believe it was directed at any individual because of their gender.

Like Akpoti-Uduaghan claimed, Imasuen noted that there are several times he had raised his hand to speak and the Senate President fails to recognise him and maybe appoints someone sitting behind him to speak.

“The Senate President, in my opinion, has not made any sexual remarks to any of the female senators, and I don’t think any of the female senators have complained about sexual harassment against him or anyone else. We joke a lot in the Senate, I must let you know that.

“Everybody should be patient and allow us to handle the case before us,” he said.
