Lagos Assembly crisis: APC insists Obasa won’t resign as Speaker

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has dismissed speculations that the resignation of Mudashiru Obasa, the reinstated Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, was part of the terms of a settlement reached to resolve the leadership crisis.

The clarification comes as Obasa held a reconciliation meeting with his colleagues on Tuesday evening, March 4, 2025.

Obasa was re-elected as Speaker on Monday, March 3, 2025, after Mojisola Meranda stepped down from the position. The APC, led by Chairman Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, alongside other party leaders, played a crucial role in mediating the crisis.

However, there were rumours that Obasa would resign within 48 hours to pave the way for a new Speaker from Lagos West, as demanded by some lawmakers.

The APC has denied claims, stating that no such arrangement was made during the negotiations.

APC spokesman Seye Oladejo said there was no agreement for Obasa to resign as part of the settlement terms.

Additionally, Oladejo confirmed that Obasa is expected to withdraw the lawsuit he filed against his colleagues, which is seen as a step towards renewed peace and progress within the House.

Oladejo said: “To the best of my knowledge, there was no time the arrangement for Obasa to resign came up in the terms of settlement of the crisis.”

When asked if Obasa will drop the lawsuit against his colleagues, he said: “I’m aware that any moment from now, Obasa will withdraw the law suit in the interest of renewed peace and progress of the House in particular and the party in general.”
