Opposition parties in Lagos State have begun the process of encouraging the embattled former Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa to leave the ruling party.
Obasa, a member of the All Progressives Congress was impeached by Lagos lawmakers while he was away in the United States of America.
He was immediately replaced by his deputy, Mojisola Meranda and has since faced challenges including allegations of abuse of office and embezzlement of funds.
However, following the crisis which has rocked the Lagos State Assembly, the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state has said the party is open to accommodating Obasa.
The vice chairman of the Lagos State chapter of the PDP, Benedict Tai, said should Obasa decide to leave the APC, he is feee to join the opposition.
Tai, however stated that the PDP would ensure that appropriate checks are done should the former Speaker join the party.
He said, “If we accept him into the party, we will put checks and balances in place because no one can just come in and demand a position.
“The person must have spent years in the party. We need to be sure he isn’t coming to disrupt the party, as some have done in the past,” Tai noted.
He also stated that the current crisis in Lagos is favourable to the PDP if only party members have learnt their lessons.
In the same vein, the chairman of the Labour Party in Lagos, Dayo Ekong said, it is a well-known fact that Obasa is ambitious about becoming the next governor of Lagos State.
He stated that while the party is ready to accommodate him, it is important to make it clear to everyone that the 2023 Lagos State governorship candidate for Labour Party is still a member of the party.
Ekong said, “There are no automatic rights anywhere. People were at the party before he came in.
“What we will do is allow everyone to go through the primaries and test their popularity. It’s not about granting an automatic ticket to anyone,” he stated.
