Rivers Political Crisis: Pro-Wike Assembly Speaker Amaewhule Speaks on Court’s Ruling

The Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, who leads the faction of the legislature loyal to the minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, has slammed Governor Siminalayi Fubara for allegedly withholding the Assembly’s statutory entitlements.

Speaking at a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Monday, Amaewhule accused Fubara of starving the Assembly of funds for nearly a year, despite legal provisions ensuring financial independence for the legislature.

He declared that the Supreme Court’s judgment on Monday had validated all 27 lawmakers loyal to Wike as legitimate members of the Assembly, warning the governor against disobeying the ruling.

Amaewhule expressed satisfaction with the Supreme Court’s decision.

He said, “The Supreme Court has spoken, and the people of Rivers State are elated with this judgment.”

“The end to this rascality is very near,” he added.

He thanked key stakeholders, including Wike, for their continued support during the political battle.

The Speaker further accused Governor Fubara of disregarding multiple court rulings, insisting that all eyes were now on him to see whether he would respect the Supreme Court’s verdict.

During the press briefing, Amaewhule announced that the Assembly had declared three seats vacant due to absenteeism. He also disclosed that one former member had passed away, while another had abandoned their duties.

He called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct fresh elections to fill the vacant positions, stating that the legislature must continue to function effectively.
