Telecommunications operators in the country have announced plans to increase their tariffs by 50% starting from March.
The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) disclosed that the new tariffs would be implemented once the necessary approvals have been obtained from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
The NCC had approved the 50% tariff hike on January 20, 2025, after a decade of no increases.
Gbenga Adebayo, chairman of ALTON, explained that the telcos would issue their tariffs differently and were currently filing, reviewing, and getting approvals from the NCC.
Adebayo said that the tariff adjustment was crucial for the survival of the telecom industry, stating that the government should not rely on the industry to subsidize others. He noted that it was essential for players in the industry to charge sustainable rates, as the sector cannot subsidize others.
