As part of plans to increase tax revenue for Government, Ogun State Internal Revenue Service (OGIRS) has embarked on a wide enforcement drive, to recover all outstanding tax liabilities on Personal Income tax, Withholding tax, Consumption tax, among others.
The Executive Chairman, Ogun State Internal Revenue Service (OGIRS), Mr. Olugbenga Olaleye laid emphasis on this while leading a team during an enforcement drive across the state. He said the exercise was to ensure that taxpayers and tax agents comply with tax payment, noting that tax was an obligation that every citizen must fulfil.
He pointed out that the drive would serve as an awareness exercise for all taxpayers, adding that it would also be an avenue to educate them on the right steps to take when they want to pay.
Chairman, represented by Director, Field Operations, Mr. Hezekiah Sobayo reiterated the need for taxpayers and tax agents to always pay "as and when due" for government to fund projects, which would make citizens enjoy the dividends of democracy.
"The exercise is necessary in order to create awareness for taxpayers and tax agents towards enlightening them on how to pay and the right channel to pay to. Also, to educate them on the need to pay "as and when due" in order to generate more funds for government, "he said.
In his reaction, Tax Office Manager, Oke-Mosan Tax Office, Ven. Adewale Adelani said that the exercise was a statutory responsibility from both OGIRS and taxpayers, advising the general public to always pay taxes promptly, saying government was aware of the economic situation in the country and payment of taxes would enable it do more for people.
In his remarks, Head, Enforcement, OGIRS, Mr. Tobi Adeyoola hinted that the primary objective of the exercise was to ensure compliance in revenue generation, noting that citizens needed to contribute their quota through tax payment. He advised individuals not to wait until period of enforcement before remitting their taxes.
