New Education Minister Reverses 18-Year Entry Limit for University Admission

The new Minister of Education, Dr. Morufu Olatunji Alausa, has reversed the 18-year entry age for university admission introduced by his predecessor, Professor Tahir Mamman.

The previous policy had sparked controversy among stakeholders.

Dr. Alausa, who took office after last month’s cabinet reshuffle, said the policy was detrimental to the federal government’s efforts to reduce out-of-school children. He also noted that it’s unsustainable for the education sector. Instead, the 16-year age limit will be maintained, with exceptions granted for gifted children.

The new minister unveiled plans to transform Nigeria’s education system, shifting the focus to practical learning. According to him, the education system will be 80% practical and 20% classroom/theoretical.

Alausa previously served as the Minister of State for Health, prior to President Tinubu’s cabinet reshuffle in October.
