Governors reach resolution on NASS’ ongoing constitution review process

The 36 governors of Nigeria have pledged to support the National Assembly’s ongoing review of the 1999 Constitution, committing to a collaborative effort with the Legislature to ensure the success of the ambitious exercise.

During a meeting of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) in Abuja on Wednesday night, the governors were briefed by Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, who also chairs the House Committee on Constitution Review. Kalu emphasised the importance of the governors’ involvement, stating, “We informed them that we have received over 161 areas to amend in the constitution and will provide a detailed breakdown in future engagements.”

The Deputy Speaker was accompanied by other House members during the briefing, which sought to align the governors with the Legislature’s efforts. Kalu noted that the meeting was essential for transparency and inclusivity in the constitutional amendment process.

Additionally, the governors discussed planned education reforms with the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa. Expressing their readiness to partner with the Federal Government on the initiative, the NGF signalled a unified approach to address challenges in the education sector.

The NGF’s Chairperson underscored the governors’ commitment to both initiatives, calling them pivotal to Nigeria’s progress. “We are resolute in working hand-in-hand with the National Assembly and the Federal Government to achieve these reforms,” the NGF’s statement read.

As the constitution review process unfolds, the governors’ collaboration with the Legislature could serve as a cornerstone for broader governance reforms across the country.
