WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY: TESCOM APPOINTS 460, ENLISTS 367 OGUNTEACH INTERS

Another 460 interns who have completed their two-year internship under OgunTEACh have been given permanent appointment, while 367 others get enlisted into the scheme.

The gesture was in commemoration of the 2024 World Teachers’ Day, at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Abeokuta, with the theme, “Valuing Teachers' Voices: Towards a New School Contract For Education”, which also had outstanding teachers in the last academic session being honoured.

Speaking during the celebration, Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, acknowledged the contributions of teachers to nation building, saying teachers’ welfare and professional excellence were in the first burner of his government.

"A teacher's influence extends far beyond the classroom. A teacher is nurturing generations, building characters and fostering the nation", he said.

On his part, Chairman, Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), Evang. Olalekan Ifede, while congratulating the teachers, charged them to be more dedicated to duty, adding that their contributions to humanity was immeasurable and tasked the newly absorbed teachers to strive for excellence in their career path.

"The government has been magnanimous. Another 460 appointed as permanent teachers completes the 1200 OgunTEACh enlistment which started in 2021. Again, 594 new interns are being enlisted by the Commission. This speaks volume of the dedication of this administration to education and teachers in particular", he said.

In their separate remarks, some unions leaders including, Comrade Oladipupo Sewakanu and Comrade (Dr.) Felix Agbesanwa of Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) respectively, expressed satisfaction at the welfarism teachers were enjoying under the Abiodun-led government, pointing out that it was time schools adopted the use of e-lesson, calling for an upward review of OgunTEACh interns' stipend.

Two of the new teachers, Mustafa Ahmed and Raheem Fatimah, appreciated the state government for keeping its promise, saying the move was unprecedented.

Highlight of the event was presentation of awards in various categories, with Mr. Ogunfeso Tajudeen of Ishara Secondary School, Remo, emerging the Overall Best Teacher in the 2024 Cambridge Dedicated Teachers' Award, with the sum of N2.5 million.
