Wike Moves to Prevent Prosecution of Alleged Loyalists Linked to Rivers State Violence

Former Rivers State Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has disclosed that he has instructed his lawyers to file a lawsuit against the panel of inquiry established by Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Wike made this revelation during an appearance on Channels TV’s Politics Today on Tuesday night.

According to Wike, “The governor said this is the handiwork of his political opponents. Knowing them, why are they stating the panel of inquiry? You know them; all you need to do is get the police to arrest them.”

The lawsuit comes in response to Fubara’s establishment of a judicial commission of inquiry to investigate the violence that marred the recent local government elections in Rivers State.

Recall that the violence, which occurred on Monday, October 7, 2024, was allegedly carried out by loyalists of Wike, who has been at odds with Fubara.

The attacks resulted in the destruction of three local government secretariats.

In reaction, Fubara has pledged to take action against those responsible.

“We won’t stand by and watch political thugs wreak havoc in Rivers State.

“Those behind these attacks will account for their atrocities,” Fubara declared while swearing in four new commissioners at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Tuesday.

He added, “I said it before it happened. Those behind this are unhappy and have gone to extreme lengths to sow discord among our people.

“But we won’t allow this to go unpunished. We will work with security agencies to uncover those responsible and ensure they face justice.”

Meanwhile, a statement by the Office of the Secretary to the Rivers State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo on Tuesday, said the judicial commission, is established pursuant to Section 2(1) of the Commissions of Inquiry Law to investigate the arson, killings, and destruction of property at local government council headquarters.
