OGHA PASSES CONSUMER PROTECTION LAW, APPOINTS THREE DEPUTY CLERKS

In its bid to address consumer extortion, disputes and other sharp practices, the Ogun State House of Assembly has passed the Consumer Protection bill, 2024.

The passage of the bill titled: “HB No. 013/OG/2021- A bill for a law to Establish the Ogun State Consumer Protection Agency, Provide for the Protection of the interest of Consumers, Settlement of Consumer Disputes and for Connected Purposes,” followed the presentation of the report of the Committee on Industry, Trade and Investments by the Sponsor, Hon. Lukman Adeleye at a plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Adeleye thereafter moved the motion for the adoption of the report, seconded by Hon. Babatunde Tella and supported by other lawmakers through a voice vote.

The bill was later read and adopted clause-by-clause before the Committee of the Whole House, after which the motion for its third reading was moved by the Majority Leader, Yusuf Sheriff, seconded by Dickson Awolaja, while the Clerk of the House and Head of Legislative Services, Mr. Sakiru Adebakin, took the third reading of the bill before the lawmakers.

Responding, Speaker Elemide directed that the clean copy of the bill be transmitted to the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun for his assent.

In another development, the Speaker announced the appointment of three new Deputy Clerks in consonance with the provisions of the House of Assembly Service Commission (Amendment) Law.

According to Elemide, the Deputy Clerk I, Barr (Mrs.) Funmilayo Adeyemi would oversee Planning, Training and Legal Services, while Deputy Clerk II- Mr. Temitope Hokon, would be in charge of Legislative Services, Information and Public Service, just as Deputy Clerk III-Mr. Fatai Ayodeji is to head Administration, Finance and Supplies.
