Damagum may step down next week as PDP govs offer acting national chair soft landing

Indications have emerged that Ambassador Umar Damagum, the acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), may be stepping down from his position in the coming week.

This development follows a meeting among PDP governors held in Akure, Ondo State, on Monday and Tuesday.

The governors, alarmed by the growing factionalism within the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), are reportedly seeking unity to preserve the party ahead of the 2024 National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.

Present at the meeting were top party officials, including Damagum, PDP Deputy National Chairman (South) Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja, and several governors, such as Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, and Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke.

The group discussed a proposal allowing Damagum to remain in his position until the NEC meeting, which is expected to finalize a North-Central nominee for the party’s chairmanship.

According to Daily Trust, some governors like Ademola Adeleke were said to have expressed concern that the division could hurt their political ambitions.

Adeleke, in particular, voiced concerns that the crisis might hinder his chances of re-election in 2026.

The NEC meeting, scheduled for October 24, will likely ratify the chairmanship decision and could also establish dates for a national convention to resolve the lingering issues.
