Tinubu meets King Charles III to explore new strategies for climate financing in London

In a significant diplomatic engagement, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu met with King Charles III at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday, September 12.

The meeting, which marked their first direct encounter since the COP 28 Climate Summit in Dubai last year, underscored the strong and enduring relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

According to Mr Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, the meeting was initiated at King Charles III’s request.

The two leaders focused on global and regional issues, particularly the pressing challenge of climate change.

“Both leaders discussed the urgent and complex challenge of climate change,” Onanuga stated.

He added that they explored collaborative opportunities in preparation for the upcoming COP 29 Summit in Azerbaijan and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa.

President Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to tackling climate change while aligning with the nation’s energy security objectives.

He expressed Nigeria’s readiness to embrace global sustainability strategies and highlighted the country’s role as a leader in Africa and the Commonwealth.

The dialogue also included discussions on innovative approaches to climate financing and funding, reflecting a mutual interest in enhancing partnerships.

Both leaders want to leverage Nigeria’s prominent position to drive global impactful climate action and sustainable development initiatives.
