Despite the release of its President, Comrade Joe Ajaero by the Department of State Services, DSS, the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC has vowed to continue struggling.

Recall that the DSS succumbed to public pressure and freed Comrade Ajaero, who was arrested and detained earlier on Monday on his way to the UK to attend and address the Congress of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Britain, representing Nigerian workers in critical discussions on workers’ rights and social justice.

Also, the labour union had given the federal government an ultimatum to release its president unconditionally by Monday midnight or face severe consequences.

A communique issued by the NLC at the end of its National Administrative Council (NAC) meeting on Monday described the arrest and detention of Ajaero as “brazen and illegal”.

However, despite Comrade Ajaero’s freedom, the NLC in a terse post on its X handle early on Tuesday, vowed to continue struggling, maintaining that they cannot be silenced.

The struggle continues, we can’t be silenced,” the post reads.

It is not clear why the NLC has vowed to “continue struggling,” Recall  that the labour union had demanded four things from the federal government.

These are the immediate implementation of the new minimum wage, the immediate reversal of the price of petrol, reversal of illegal hike in electricity tariffs and the unconditional release of Comrade Ajaero from DSS custody.
