Presidency Fires Back at NLC Over Accusation of Petrol Price Increase

The Presidency has denied allegations made by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) that President Bola Tinubu reneged on a promise to keep fuel prices stable.

Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, a media aide to the President, described the NLC’s claims as “dirty politics.”

Abdulaziz stated that he was present at two meetings between President Tinubu and labour leaders during minimum wage negotiations and that there was no discussion of a fuel price hike in exchange for a minimum wage increase.

The NLC had accused President Tinubu of betraying the trust of Nigerians by increasing fuel prices despite a promise to maintain stable prices. The labour union claimed that an important condition for accepting the N70,000 national minimum wage was a guarantee that fuel prices would not be increased.

However, Abdulaziz dismissed the NLC’s claims, saying that President Tinubu never made such a promise.

He tweeted, “I sat through the two meetings President @officialABAT had with Labour leaders on minimum wage. At neither of the meetings was an offer made in exchange for a fuel price hike. Ajaero is once again playing his dirty politics with the emotions of Nigerians.”

The NLC has condemned the government’s recent fuel price hike, describing it as a betrayal of trust. The labour union has demanded a reversal of the fuel price increase, an end to the crackdown on protesters, and a halt to the encroachment on the Ministry of Labour and Employment’s duties.
