Nigeria breaks power generation record at 5,313MW

Nigeria’s power generation reached a historic high of 5,313MW on Monday, marking the highest level in three years.

Bolaji Tunji, the Special Adviser on Strategic Communication and Media Relations to the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, announced the milestone.

Adelabu urged Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) to absorb more energy to avoid grid instability.

“When power is produced and not picked by the DisCos, it could lead to grid collapse as frequency drops,” he cautioned.

The federal government had previously set a target to generate 6,000MW by year-end.

In May, Nigeria’s power generation hit 5,000MW, and Adelabu reaffirmed the commitment to achieve 6,000MW, citing improvements in the sector throughout 2023.

Adelabu also indicated efforts to encourage industries to purchase bulk energy, contributing to the country’s push towards a more stable and robust power sector.
