Heavy security at Edo Govt House amid Shaibu’s return plot

The Edo State Government House was on high alert on Monday as security was tightened following reports of Philip Shaibu’s attempts to resume as Deputy Governor.

The intensified security presence at Osadebe Avenue came after Shaibu challenged his impeachment, which had been nullified by a Federal High Court in Abuja.

Shaibu, who was removed from office by the Edo State House of Assembly after a fallout with Governor Godwin Obaseki, sought reinstatement through a court order issued by Justice J.K. Omotosho.

However, the government has resisted complying, citing a pending stay of execution appeal.

Visitors and civil servants faced restricted access to the Government House, with only security vehicles permitted entry.

“We were shocked to see so many security personnel around the premises,” an anonymous civil servant stated.

Obaseki’s camp warns of ‘chaos’

Crusoe Osagie, Obaseki’s spokesperson, raised concerns over Shaibu’s alleged plans to regain his position forcefully.

“We have intelligence that Shaibu intends to storm the Government House despite the appeal. This could lead to anarchy,” Osagie warned, adding that a previous attempt had resulted in the tragic death of a police officer.

Osagie called on the Inspector General of Police to intervene, stressing, “We cannot afford more bloodshed over one man’s ambition.”

Shaibu denies allegations, calls for peace

In response, Shaibu’s spokesperson, Mr. Ebomhiana Musa, dismissed the accusations. “Philip Shaibu is a peaceful man who respects the rule of law,” Musa remarked.

“He remains the legitimate Deputy Governor, and there is no need for conflict over what is rightfully his.”
