Amid Party Crisis, PDP G5 Meets

A crucial meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) G5 group headed by FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike was held on Friday in Abuja.

The G5 group comprises Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, immediate past governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Samuel Ortom (Benue), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), and Wike.

An anonymous but reliable source told Punch that the purpose of the Friday meeting was to address pressing issues in the opposition party as it navigates its current political landscape.

“Yes, they met briefly on Friday to discuss as friends and brothers. The discussion centered on the PDP and other issues they considered important. They also review their strategies. They may still meet tomorrow (Saturday),” the source was quoted as saying.

Recall that the G5 group, formed in the build-up of the 2023 general elections, has maintained its vocal stand over its demands and the necessity for strategic changes.

The group had demanded the resignation of then PDP national chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu for a southerner as a condition to support the presidential bid of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, candidate of the PDP.

The group based its argument that since the party’s presidential ticket had gone to a northerner (Atiku Abubakar), it was unjust the position of the national chairman remained in the north.

Atiku is from Adamawa, North East, while Ayu hails from Benue, North Central.

The group’s demand was, however, rejected, the result of which was internal divisions.

While some members of the group openly opposed Atiku, others secretly opposed him too. This contributed to the defeat of Atiku at the polls.
