The Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi, is observing a seven-day period of silence starting September 24, as part of his annual leave.

The palace has announced a ban on drumming and other forms of musical expression during this time.

In a statement released by Chief Press Secretary Michael Adeyeye, the Deji is using this period to pray for the “peace, prosperity, and progress of Akure Kingdom, Ondo State, and the country at large.” The leave will last until September 30.

Residents are reminded that all drumming activities are strictly prohibited, and the road leading to the Deji’s Palace will be closed to traffic. “Road users are therefore enjoined to make use of the adjoining routes,” the statement advised.

Additionally, in accordance with local customs, only a portion of the Oja Oba market will be closed for the duration of the Ulefunta period, which is an integral part of the traditions observed during this time.

The palace has urged residents to comply with these directives and to engage in prayer for the wellbeing of the community.

“As they go about their lawful duties, we encourage all to pray for the good of the land,” the statement concluded.

This week-long observance not only highlights the significance of tradition in Akure but also emphasizes the communal spirit of prayer and reflection during the Deji’s absence.
