After much delay, Plateau Speaker finally bows to pressure, swears in remaining 5 APC lawmakers

Five lawmakers of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have been sworn into the Plateau State House of Assembly.

The new lawmakers were all sworn in by the Speaker of the House, Gabriel Dewan, following much pressure from the APC and the governor of the state, Caleb Muftwang.

The new members of the House of Assembly were sworn in on Wednesday, September 11, at the plenary session.

They include Owen Dagogot (Quan Pan North constituency); Theodore Maiyaki (Quan Pan South constituency) and Yakubu Sanda (Pengana constituency).

Others are Dalyop Gyang (Shendam South constituency) and Dachung Dadon (Riyom constituency).

Their swearing-in comes long after 16 lawmakers were declared winners of their various constituencies by the Appeal Court in November 2023.

However, in what manner perceived as a tactical delay, the speaker of the House refused to swear them in.

Dewan in his defence claimed he had received a court order regarding their declaration as winners in their various constituencies.

This is despite several calls on President Bola Tinubu by the state party to mandate the speaker to do the needful.

In the same vein, the affected lawmakers accused the speaker of forcing them to sign undated documents as his condition to go ahead with the swearing-in process.
