40k bag rice: Nigerians lament inability to access point of sales

Nigerians have lamented their inability to locate any visible point of sale of the N40,000 per kilogram bag of rice launched by the Federal Government on Thursday last week.

Recall that the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari initiated the sale of 30,000 metric tonnes of milled rice at a subsidized rate of N40,000 per 50kg bag in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

According to him, the initiative was part of President Bola Tinubu’s agenda to ensure that “Nigerians do not go to bed hungry.”

He stressed that only citizens with the National Identity Number can access the N40,000 bag of rice.

However, residents in Abuja lamented that they are yet to get the rice.

Benedicta Okoro, a civil servant in Kubwa said she couldn’t find any location in Abuja where the N40,000 per bag rice was sold.

I wonder why Nigerians can’t see where to buy the N40,000 per bag of rice in Abuja. I had to go to the Dutse Market to buy N84,000 per 50kg bag for local rice,” she said.

Another resident, Amina Aliyu urged the government to come clean on the said N40,000 rice distribution.

“How can you launch N40,000 per bag of rice and nobody is yet to see or buy it? The government should come clean. The last time it was said to have been launched but the people did not see it before it was suspended”, she said.

Meanwhile, an inquiry to the Director of Communications at the Ministry, Joel Oruche has not been responded to as of the time of filing this report.

The development comes amid the agonizing pain over the recent petrol pump price hike which might worsen the prices of goods and services in Nigeria, with 33.40 inflation as of July 2024.

This is why a Financial analyst, Kalu Aja, recently said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government does not match his policies with actions.
