Viral video shows DSS staff celebrating after Yusuf Bichi’s removal from office by Tinubu

Jubilation erupted at the Department of State Security (DSS) headquarters in Abuja following the announcement that President Bola Tinubu had relieved Yusuf Bichi of his duties as the Director General (DG) of the DSS.

Bichi’s replacement, Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, an Assistant DG within the same agency, was received with cheers and visible relief by many staff members.

The news of Bichi’s removal spread quickly throughout the DSS office, leading to spontaneous celebrations among staff, many of whom had long harboured grievances against their former boss.

Under Bichi’s tenure, there were numerous allegations of nepotism, favouritism, and a general atmosphere of distrust and discontent within the ranks of the security agency.

Yusuf Bichi’s leadership at the DSS has been marred by controversy since his appointment by former President Muhammadu Buhari in September 2018.

While he was seen by some as a steady hand in turbulent times, many within the agency accused him of prioritizing loyalty over competence, leading to widespread allegations of nepotism.

Several staff members felt marginalized and overlooked for promotions, with key positions reportedly filled by individuals from Bichi’s ethnic group or personal connections.

The discontent among the staff was not limited to promotions and postings. There were whispers of a toxic work environment where dissent was stifled, and those who dared to speak out against perceived injustices were allegedly sidelined or reprimanded.

The morale within the DSS had reportedly reached an all-time low, with many officers feeling demoralized and disconnected from the leadership.

As news of Ajayi’s appointment was confirmed, DSS staff could be seen hugging, shaking hands, and dancing at their office. For many, the change in leadership represents a victory for those who had felt oppressed and unheard of under Bichi’s regime.
