As part of efforts to contain spread of cholera outbreak, Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun state, has embarked on awareness campaign programmes to sensitise residents of the area.

Speaking during a stakeholders’ seminar at the council secretariat, Director, Water Supply and Environmental Sanitation in the local government, Sanitarian Temitope Adeleye, said it was important to enlighten people on the causes and preventive measures to curb the spread of cholera.

Adeleye pointed out that cholera was a deadly disease that could be contracted through contaminated food or drink with cholera bacterium, highlighting some of its symptoms to include, severe watery diarrhoea, vomiting and dehydration, saying that if left untreated, it could lead to death within hours.

She stated that the disease could be prevented by ensuring personal and environmental hygiene, through washing of hands before eating and cooking, and after using toilet, adding that food must be thoroughly cooked before eating.

Adeleye revealed that enforcement team would be visiting eateries and private food vendors to ensure proper hygiene, warning that anyone found guilty would face the wrath of the law.

The Director lauded governments at all levels for prompt intervention in providing protective kits, soliciting the support of stakeholders and residents to nip the disease in the bud

Responding, two of the participants, Miss. Folashade Opaleye and Mr. Busayo Muniru appreciated the council authority for the enlightenment, promising to adhere strictly to the precautions for healthy living.
