The remains of legendary musician, Onyeka Onwenu, have left Reddington Hospital on Victoria Island, Lagos, following her sudden demise on Tuesday evening.
Onwenu slumped shortly after performing at the birthday celebration of renowned businesswoman, Mrs. Stella Okoli. Despite efforts to save her, she was pronounced dead at the hospital.
“It’s a sad day for the music industry,” said an eyewitness. “Onyeka Onwenu performed at Mrs. Okoli’s birthday party today and suddenly slumped. She was rushed to Reddington Hospital but couldn’t make it.”
Born on January 31, 1952, Onwenu was a highly respected singer, politician, and rights activist. She was affectionately known as “The Elegant Stallion” by the Nigerian press.
Throughout her illustrious career, Onwenu held various prestigious positions, including chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development.
Onwenu’s music legacy includes hit songs like “Ekwe” and “Wait for Me”, her iconic collaboration with Juju Maestro, King Sunny Ade.
