Tripartite Committee Submits Report on New Minimum Wage to FG

The Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage has finally submitted its report to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

The development which was announced in a statement on Monday paves the way for the announcement of a new national minimum wage for Nigerian workers.

The Director of Information and Public Relations in the office of the SGF, Segun Imohiosen, confirmed the submission of the report in the statement.

The committee, inaugurated by President Bola Tinubu on January 30, 2024, was tasked with recommending a new national minimum wage for workers in both the public and private sectors.

The statement read, “The Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage has concluded its assignment and submitted the report to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation on Monday, 10th June 2024.”

The report will be presented to the President upon the return of organized labour leaders from the International Labour Organisation Conference in Geneva, Switzerland.

“The SGF thanked the Chairman of the Committee, Alh. Bukar Goni Aji and members for their commitment and sacrifices,” the statement added.

This development comes after weeks of negotiations and a nationwide strike by organized labour, comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), demanding a new minimum wage and reversal of the electricity tariff hike.

According to the labour unions, the current minimum wage of ₦30,000 is insufficient to cater to the well-being of an average Nigerian worker, given the current inflationary pressures.

Although the labour unions initially demanded ₦494,000, they later reduced their demand to ₦250,000. Meanwhile, the government offered ₦62,000 an increase from its initial proposals of ₦57,000 and ₦60,000.
