Tinubu approves national construction and household support programmes

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the prioritization of several major infrastructure projects and national support programmes aimed at enhancing transportation networks and providing significant support to Nigerian households.

One of the flagship projects is the Sokoto-Badagry Highway, which will traverse the states of Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Ogun, and Lagos.

The highway project is expected to improve connectivity and foster economic growth across these regions. Additionally, the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, currently underway, is set to boost economic activities along Nigeria’s coastal regions by enhancing coastal connectivity.

The Trans-Saharan Highway, which links Enugu, Abakaliki, Ogoja, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa, and Abuja, is another key project aimed at facilitating smoother and more efficient transportation across the central and eastern parts of the country.

In the realm of rail infrastructure, President Tinubu has approved full counterpart financing for the Port Harcourt-Maiduguri Railway, which will traverse Rivers, Abia, Enugu, Benue, Nasarawa, Plateau, Bauchi, Gombe, Yobe, and Borno, thereby enhancing rail connectivity across these regions.

Furthermore, the Ibadan-Abuja segment of the Lagos-Kano Standard-Gauge Railway is set to receive full counterpart financing.

The railway segment will pass through Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Kwara, Niger, Abuja, Kaduna, and Kano, further advancing Nigeria’s railway infrastructure.

In addition to these major infrastructure projects, President Tinubu has introduced the National Construction and Household Support Programme, which includes several initiatives to support households and improve living standards across the country.

A one-off allocation of N10 billion has been made for states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to procure buses and implement the CNG uplift programme, aimed at enhancing public transportation and reducing transportation costs.

The programme also includes the delivery of N50,000 uplift grants to 100,000 families per state for three months, providing direct financial support to households.

There is also provision for collaboration and support for labour unions and civil society organizations to ensure the effective implementation of the programme.

Moreover, N155 billion will be deployed for the purchase and sale of assorted foodstuff to be distributed across the nation, aiming to alleviate food insecurity and support vulnerable populations.
