Following the rise of the cases of drug abuse , cultism and other vices in the country, Ikenne Youth Associations in Conjunction With Ikenne Reform Group in Ogun State on Friday campaigned against the abuse of drugs , cultism and other vices in the country.
The group decried high rate of cultism and drug abuse, urging youths on the need on more productive engagements rather than destroying their future by indulging in unhealthy behaviours.
The Ikenne Youth President , Comrade Okunsanya Oluwasegun in his welcome address at "The Youth Summit" with the theme Advocacy on the 21st Century Menace That Affects The Youth In Our Society" declared that cultism is a menace that must be eradicated among youths because it poses a significant threat to society and the country at large.
He also expressed the urgent need to take action against the challenges of drugs and cultism, stating that the situation has become worrisome.
"It is with enormous pleasure that I welcome everyone to this auspicious summit geared towards engaging all concerned about the situation of our community. Few weeks after my emergence as the 7th president of Ikenne youth association, I received an August phone call from the convener of this program, Mr Ogundipe Olugbenga on the need for the association to have a dilogue section with the the general youth of Ikenne to educate and enlighten ourselves the adverse effects of these social vices that has invaded our town in recent times and immediately i keyed into the idea to have a symposium to mitigate the possible social vices in our dear town through youth engagement. We are gathered here to talk to ourselves on the need to abstain totally from possible social vices such as cultism, indecent dressing, illicit drugs , pre marital sex, examination malpractice, thuggery and hooliganism, conflict and many other unhealthy lifestyles
"As we all know that the prevalence of these vices poses a significant threat to the safety and well-being of our communities. Our aims and objectives is to let our youths know that engaging in drug abuse and cultism can not take them anywhere than destroying their future".he concluded
Also, Mrs Bamisaye Funmilayo, Deputy Sup. Of Narcotics while speaking on the om "Drugs Abuse" vehemently condemned the issue of drug abuse among Nigerian youths, saying that the rate youths are abusing drugs are increasing on daily basis.
She urged them to abstain from it , saying that it will not help than to cause a damage to their lives.
The Special Adviser to the Governor of Ogun State On Education, Mrs Ronke Soyombo commended the organizers on the Youth Summit, saying that it will help reduce the rate of social vices in the country.
Soyombo while speaking with newsmen lamented over high rate of drug abuse and cultism among the youths.
She said that the State Government under the leadership of Prince Dr. Dapo Abiodun is working hard to eradicate cultism and drug abuse in the State.
"I want Thank God today's program. It's been well organized , I must say, we appreciate the organisers of this event and to me, it is beginning of the greater things in Ikenne , Remo, we can see that a lot of our youths are trying to ensure that youths are staying focused and not only that, they are saying no to drugs, cultism and other social vices and I want to say well done to the organisers. The State Government is doing a lot, you will see that from all the things that we are doing, we are collaboratively with NDLEA and our schools have actually made students to come in with letters of underaken that if your child is actually seen with drugs in school, we will take action immediately and every principal, every health Teacher know what is expected because all those things, we have written them in black and white so everybody understands how to deal with our children, above all, they are strategies to rehabilitate children that have gone into drugs because you can not completely say you are throwing a child out , you must find a way to bring them back and rehabilitate them. Abayomi Adeleye , PRO 1 of Ikenne Youth Association urged youths to join hands with the association in fighting drug abuse.
Dr Amusan, a doctor in Olabisi Onabanjo teaching Hospital while speaking on "Teenage and Unwanted Pregnancy" cautioned young girls against unwanted pregnancies.
Mr Gbenga Ogundipe Converner ikenne Reform Group , Mrs Dayo Eyiowuawi Former Head of Operations ICS limited Lagos, PROF Musediq Abdul Senior Lecturer Lambton College Canada, Mr Ola Owokoya USA Army also advised youths to stay away from cultism, drug abuse and other social vices.
