Residents of Ijebu-Ode have been cautioned against activities that could escalate flooding like dumping of refuse in drainages, among other environmental negligence during the raining season.
The Chairman, Ijebu-Ode Local Government, Hon. Babatunde Emilola-Gazal, disclosed this to journalists while on tour of Itoro and environs, to ensure compliance towards promoting healthy living and preventing flooding during the rainy season.
"We are going to prevent environmental negligence, particularly during the rainy season; we have discovered that some people are in the habit of dumping their refuse inside the drainage once they notice it is about to rain and this practice among other unwholesome environmental practices is wrong in 21st Century.
"Refuse dumped inside the drainage will automatically block the channel of water, prevent free flow of the water and eventually cause flooding, due to the blockage of the drainage", he said.
The council boss, who disclosed that government had put in place measures to enforce compliance, warned that anyone caught dumping refuse inside drainages would be prosecuted, while traders along drainages should endaevour to always clear it, to avoid blockage, enjoining residents to maintain cleanliness.
One of the residents, Mrs, Amope Saheed, commended the Chairman for promoting healthy living and promised to adhere to environmental laws.
