Just in: Kano State Assembly dethrones 5 Emirs amidst rumours of Sanusi’s return

The Kano State House of Assembly has dissolved all five emirate councils in the state, citing the exclusive authority of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to appoint new emirs. This decision followed extensive deliberations during the assembly’s plenary session.

This development is coming amidst reports that the former EMir, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, may be returned as the Sole Emir of Kano. It can be recalled that he was dethroned on the orders of the former state governor, Abdullahi Ganduje.

According to POLITICS NIGERIA, it was learnt that the Kano State Emirate Council Amendment Bill underwent its second and third readings on Thursday morning, leading to the dissolution. Deputy Speaker Alhaji Muhammad Bello Butu Butu disclosed that the repeal of the law would restore Kano’s former prestige adding that dividing the Kano Emirate into five had diminished the state’s influence and dignity on the national stage.

Majority Leader Alhaji Lawan Hussaini Dala emphasized that the emirate council, a key custodian of cultural heritage, had been compromised by the creation of additional emirates.

Dala further clarified to journalists that with the new amendment, all five emirate councils were now abolished. The Commissioner for Local Governments would temporarily oversee the administration of the emirates.
