Ondo deputy governorship: Ex-chief of staff, former governor’s daughter emerge as front-runners

Several notable personalities, including a former Chief of Staff, a former governor’s daughter, and a sitting commissioner, are emerging as frontrunners in the race to secure the coveted position of Deputy Governor in Ondo State.

As the political landscape in the state shifts following the recent transition of power due to the passing of the former governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, the race for the deputy governorship seat has intensified.

Among the prominent contenders is the former Chief of Staff to the late governor, Chief Olugbenga Ale, who is rumoured to be eyeing the position to compensate Owo, the hometown of the deceased governor, for its loss.

Additionally, the daughter of the late governor, Jumoke Ajasin, and a sitting commissioner, Mr. Rasaq Obe, who heads the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, have also emerged as strong contenders vying for the deputy governorship slot.

Others are a former federal lawmaker, Alade Mayorkun; Olumuyiwa Adu; and a former Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development in the state, Omowunmi Olatunji-Ohwovoriole, among the key players.

Their aspirations have added complexity to the selection process, underscoring the intricate dynamics at play within the state’s political landscape.

The selection of the next Deputy Governor in Ondo State has become a focal point of contention due to the diverse pool of aspirants and regional considerations.

Some factions advocate for candidates from Owo, the late governor’s hometown. In contrast, others cite traditional norms suggesting that the deputy should be chosen from the Ondo Central Senatorial District, especially when the governor hails from the Southern region.
