Why We Suspended Nationwide Strike – NLC, TUC

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) on Wednesday jointly announced the suspension of their nationwide indefinite strike, which commenced on Tuesday.

This decision follows a meeting with the Federal Government, mediated by the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu.

However, the Organised Labour has clarified that the decision is not a sign of retreat but rather a strategic move to facilitate further discussions and ensure that the government delivers on its promises.

In a joint statement released on Wednesday, NLC General Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja and TUC Secretary General Nuhu Toro outlined the reasons behind the suspension. They stated that the NEC (National Executive Council) of both unions had carefully reviewed the offers presented by the Federal Government and found them credible. This, coupled with the government’s commitment to address the key demands of the Organised Labour, led to the decision to suspend the strike.

One of the primary demands of the Organised Labour was justice for the abduction and brutalisation of NLC President Joe Ajaero and other union members.

“We expect government to address the distressing abduction and brutalisation of the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, and others.

“These incidents occurred in the hands of the Police and Gov. Hope Uzodimma’s thugs in Owerri, in Imo, on the 1st day of November, 2023,” the statement said.

It added that the NSA, on behalf of the government, tendered an apology for this incident and promised to coordinate a thorough investigation. According to him, some of the perpetrators have already been arrested, and the remaining individuals involved will be identified and prosecuted.

The Organised Labour has also confirmed that a high-powered investigation is currently underway, and the leadership of both unions will be kept informed of the progress made. They have commended their affiliates and state councils for their unwavering commitment and tenacity, which contributed to the success of the strike.
