Market men and women in Sagamu and its environs have been enjoined to ensure prompt payment of Tax as and when due, to avoid being sanctioned by the authority of the Ogun State Internal Revenue Service (OGIRS).
The Tax Manager, OGIRS, Sagamu Local Government, Mr. Felix Fagbohun made this known during an enforcement exercise in Awolowo market, Sagamu, saying regular payment of taxes by the people would make the government deliver more dividends of democracy, with the provision of social amenities that would improve the citizenry standard of living.
According to Mr. Fagbohun, ‘’Without tax, a meaningful project cannot be executed by the government, as fundamental infrastructure were funded through taxpayers money’’.
He advised the people to continue to contribute their quota to the development of the State through the payment of taxes and levies at the appropriate time.
While shedding light on the sealing of Awolowo market, he said,’’ The agency had sent various letters to the executives of the market in respect of non-payment of taxes, and series of meetings were also held with the market leadership to persuade and fashion out convenient ways of payment among others. In fact, friendly approaches adopted by the Agency were refuted and taken for granted hence the government had no other option than to seal the market’’.
In her response, the Iyaloja of Awolowo market, Mrs. Adenike Awolesi expressed displeasure over the failure of traders to pay tax, assuring the officials that the traders would ensure prompt payment of their taxes, and continue to support the present government in its developmental drive.
