AYETORO COUNCIL OF CHIEFS INTERVENES TO RESOLVE CRISIS BETWEEN HERDERS/ FARMERS

 


 In order to stem the tide of the perennial herders and farmers conflict, Ayetoro Council of Chiefs has intervened to proffer a lasting solution towards ending the crisis and preventing it from escalating across the Council Area.

                                                      

The Chairman, Yewa North Council of Baales, who doubles as Secretary General, Ogun State Hunters Association, Yewa North Chapter, Baale Agbawo, Chief Alade Adeniyi,  made this known during  a peace meeting, put in place by the Council to promote peaceful coexistence among the concerned parties in Ayetoro.    

          He said the peace meeting requires support of other stakeholders, appreciating the visit of a group of researchers from the Faculty of Multidisciplinary Studies, Department of Peace, Security and Humanitarian Studies, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Oyo State who joined the meeting.

He said the research project titled: "ECOWAS Protocol On Transhumance and the Challenges of Border Security dovetailed with the objective of the meeting.                                                                  

He called on Government at all levels to further create an enabling farming environment for all stakeholders in the sector to achieve the set goal of making   Ogun an industrialised State as well as one of the food baskets of the nation, to sustain farming in the rural areas, noting that this would provide raw materials for agro-allied industries, as well create employment opportunities for the youths

Adeniyi said the crisis between the farmers and herders must be resolved amicably so as to engender productive farming season. He noted that no nation could thrive in an atmosphere bedevilled with rancour, appealing to relevant government agencies to be involved in sensitising the concerned parties to cohabit peacefully without conflict.

Also, the Chairman, Farmers Association of Nigeria, Yewa North Chapter, Mr Adebisi Ogunmuyiwa, noted that the meeting became imperative to bring about a conflict resolution mechanism to resolving the herdsmen and crop farmers conflict in the council, which had led to the loss of lives and property, noting that it would also bring about mutual respect among key players in the agriculture sector.                  

The representative of the University of Ibadan Research team, Mr Kingsley Ikemereh, thanked the Council for taking such proactive measures to avert conflict among the farmers and herders, saying that the effort would yield the result

In his response, the Seriki Fulani, Ayetoro, Mallam Kabiru, appreciated the Council of Chiefs for the peace initiative, revealing that the crop farmers and herders had taken some measures towards finding a lasting solution to the lingering crisis, saying Ayetoro Council of Chiefs has continued to serve as perfect template to resolve the farmers/herders clashes in the council
