TRACE BOSS HARPS ON CHILDREN’S SAFETY

As schools resume for the new academic session, the Commander and Chief Executive Officer of Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Commander ‘Seni Ogunyemi has advised parents and guardians to ensure the safety of their wards as most pupils would be using roads for inward and outward journey during school period.

Commander Ogunyemi stated this while briefing newsmen on precautions to be observed by parents and pupils while using the road, noting that activities during the period would lead to an increase in human and vehicular movement.

The TRACE Boss said, "School children below four years must use a child restraint or seat belt, they should not be carried on the laps of front seat occupants and those from age 12 and above can sit in the front but must fasten the seat belt. While using the road, parents and guardians must ensure that school children are seen and noticed. In other words, school children should not cross the road behind or in between parked vehicles because drivers at times may not see them on time".

Commander Ogunyemi pointed out that school children were expected to walk on pavements and walkways, which separate them from vehicular traffic, adding that if such were not provided for, school children should walk on the side of the road facing incoming traffic.

On danger at night, the TRACE Boss said, school children must wear reflective or light-colour materials, so as to be seen and noticed, calling on parents and guardians to constantly ensure that their wards do not walk-talk via mobile phones, texting, pinging, in order not to be carried away while using the road.
