Education Committee Urges Young People To Add Skills To Educational Knowledge

Students have been advised to work towards acquiring skills to complement their educational knowledge in order to meet the begging financial needs in the 21st century.

The Chairman of Education Committee of Our Lady Seat of Wisdom Catholic Church, Adigbe,Abeokuta who is also the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Olu. Ola. Aikulola, gave this admonition while speaking to participants at the third edition of the Skills Acquisition and Empowerment programme organised by the  Committee for young people of Our Lady Seat of Wisdom Catholic Church, Adigbe, under the Catholic Diocese of Abeokuta.

The  Chairman  said that skills acquisition is the future of not only Nigeria but Africa at large, pointing out that those who are smart are combining educational knowledge with skills without complete reliance on white collar job.

He noted that the committee decided to actively engage the children and youths on holiday to ensure they learn skills that are economically benefial to them.

Aikulola said that this year's edition focuses on pastries such as cakes, meat pie, sausage rolls, doughnuts, puff-puff,egg rolls, cookies as well as soap making, paint, air freshner , auto gele, zara cap, among others.

He added that the Committee will be willing to empower the beneficiaries after exposing them to the skills.

"The last edition we had, we bought  barbing kits and other relevant tools as 'Starter Packs' for participants.

"Skills acquisition is the future of not only Nigeria but Africa. Those who have skills are eating. That's why you see people who studied Law, Accounting and other graduate courses going into farming and making a lot of money.

" I have seen people who sponsored themselves through school with the proceeds realized from plaiting hair, " Aikulola posited.

He further said that the Education Committee will continue to make impacts in the society through its mandate which cuts across the spiritual and socio-economic well-being of the married, singles and students.
