SAGAMU LG APPREHENDS DEFIANT ROADSIDE TRADERS

Following the earlier warning issued by the authority of Sagamu Local Government to traders in Sabo Market, to desist from displaying their wares on the roadside, two defiant roadside traders have been apprehended by the Council authority for endangering lives and causing heavy traffic congestion.

The Chairman, Sagamu Local Government, Hon. Afolabi Odulate represented by his Vice, Comrade Isiaka Salami disclosed this while addressing newsmen on the development.

He said those traders were arrested during a raid carried out by the LG authority last week, and released immediately after writing an undertaking not to trade on the roadside.

According to him, ‘’Before raids were carried out, the Council sensitised the traders in collaboration with Market Leaders on dangers inherent in the roadside trading, many of the traders remained adamant despite several measures to discourage them from displaying their goods on the roadside’’.

Odulate stated that his administration would continue to ensure the well-being and safety of all indigenes with a determination to serve them better. "Be rest assured that our government is committed to your safety, welfare as well as the growth of your businesses".

The Chairman emphasised that the council would no longer condone unauthorised display of goods on the roadside as it has not only led to the blockages of drainages with filths causing road flooding but also distorted the landscape and beauty of the area with makeshift stalls, which he said violated the environmental rules and regulations of the Local Government.

He advised all the affected traders to vacate the illegal roadside trading and make use of shops and stalls provided by the Local Government in a secured location, adding that henceforth any erring traders would be made to face the full weight of law.

The Chairman said the illegal activities carried out by the defiant traders are the cause of traffic bottlenecks due to the incidence of narrow roads among others that have become a common feature on the road that must come to an end.

While citing an unfortunate incident that occurred about two weeks ago where a pregnant woman with complications died as the vehicle conveying her  was knocked down in traffic due to the activities of roadside traders in Sabo Market, Odulate frowned at the incident, saying such a thing should not be heard or condoled in a civilized society.
