INSTITUTE SCORES OGUN HIGH ON PUBLIC PROCUREMENT

Registrar and Chief Executive of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply Management in Nigeria, Alhaji Aliyu Mohammed has rated Ogun State as one of the few States in the country that has shown genuine commitment to issues on Public Procurement and Supply.

Alhaji Mohammed, who said this in Abeokuta during a courtesy call on the Special Adviser and Chairman, State Council, Bureau of Public Procurement, Mr. Olaolu Olabimtan, said the visit to the State was part of its advocacy programme to meet with newly sworn-in Head of Service and other relevant stakeholders, engage them on the need to ensure that its members in the Civil Service were well taken care of.

The Registrar added that the domestication of the Public Procurement Law in the State was a welcome idea that would further engender professionalism, as well as institutionalise the procurement process in the State, calling on the government not to rest on its oars.

He charged the government at all levels to provide more funds and give prominence to capacity development for its members based on World Bank rrecommendations.

In his response, Mr. Olabimtan noted that statistics had shown that about 85 percent of State budget estimates were Procurement bound, adding that Public Procurement was an important tool in Public Financial Management Reform.      He pointed out that some major factors affecting the issue of Public Procurement in the country include, the establishment of a Professional Cadre in the service, inadequate funding, intensified advocacy, capacity training, and many more.
