Details have emerged regarding the recent meeting between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Adamu, along with the Party Secretary, Dr. Iyiola Omisore.
The meeting took place on Wednesday at the State House in Abuja.
Recall that the ruling party was thrown into a temporary crisis on Tuesday when the National Chairman rejected the principal officers announced by Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas.
Although Akpabio and Abbas had announced the principal officers during the plenary, Adamu quickly stated that the list did not originate from the party.
During a meeting with the Progressive Governors’ Forum, led by Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, Adamu expressed surprise at the announcements, stating, “I am just hearing as a rumour now from the online media that there have been some announcements in the Senate and House of Representatives.”
The party chairman further clarified, “The national headquarters of the party, the NWC, has not provided any such information or communicated about the choice of offices. Until we formally resolve and communicate with them (NASS leadership) in writing, which is the norm and practice (as it is not our intention to break away from traditions), any announcement made by the President of the Senate, Deputy Senate President, Speaker, or Deputy Speaker does not come from this secretariat.”
In reaction, President Tinubu summoned Adamu and the party secretary, Dr. Iyiola Omisore, to the State House in Abuja to discuss the matter.
While there was no official statement from the presidency after the meeting, sources revealed that the president was embarrassed by the development.
Another source indicated that during the meeting, the president endorsed the actions of the Senate President and the Speaker regarding the principal officers.
It was learnt that when contacted, the national chairman confirmed that the matter had been resolved, stating, “We have met the president, and the issues have been resolved. It’s a family affair, and there were some misunderstandings. We have been able to resolve our differences. Those who are eager to see the continuation of the conflict should please sheathe their swords. We have a complete understanding now. The president is the leader of our great party; we met him, and we are very satisfied with the discussion we had with him on the subject matter. As far as we are concerned, the issues have been laid to rest.”
There are strong indications that APC chieftains loyal to Tinubu are unhappy with Adamu, and there is growing support for his removal.
