In view of the present economic realities, the Ogun State Government has effected the payment of March and April 2023 monthly pensions of Local Government retirees who were earning N5,000 as monthly pension to N10,000.
It would be recalled that the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun had during an interactive session with pensioners, promised to see to their welfare by ensuring an improved standard of living.
Confirming the development during an interview in her office, Oke–Mosan, Abeokuta, the Permanent Secretary, Bureau of Local Government Pensions (BLGP), Mrs. Olubukola Adeniregun, stated that the Governor had mandated that the monthly payment of Local Government pensioners getting N5,000 to be increased to N10,OOO.
According to Adeniregun, “the Governor is concerned about how it would be possible for pensioners to live with a paltry sum of N5,000 in a month, despite this unwholesome development of the country’s economy.
She stated that the State government had directed that the increment should take effect from March, 2023 making it an arrears of two months, while positing that the gesture would be a continuous exercise, to further ensure pensioners’ wellness and well-being.
Adeniregun assured the senior citizens of the present administration's unwavering determination to give appropriate attention to other demands of the pensioners in due course.
In their separate submissions, the duo of the Chairmen of the Pensioners' Association, Local Government Pensioners Association of Nigeria (LOGPAN), Pastor Benedict Ademoye, Association of Retired Primary School Teachers Ogun State (ARPSTOS), Mr. Zaacheous Adekoya, and Chairperson, Retired Primary School Teachers Association of Nigeria (REPSTAN), Mrs. Caroline Oguntola, appreciated Governor Abiodun for the increment on monthly pensions, appealing for his timely intervention on other issues raised.
