PARENTAL SUPPORT FOR SPECIAL NEEDS CHILDREN EMPHASISED

To fully tap the potential of Children with Special Needs, parents and society at large have been called upon to show adequate care for their upbringing, to enable them contribute their quota to the development of the country.

The Head Teacher of Children with Special Needs school, Sagamu, Mrs.  Remilekun Olaniyan, made this known while speaking with newsmen in Sagamu, saying children with disabilities are special creatures from God and require special upkeep and attention to attain their destiny.

Mrs. Olaniyan noted that extra help in terms of standard education, adequate health care and essential welfare package were needed from the people for the special needs children to achieve their lifetime ambition of not being a liability, rather contributing meaningfully to society.

She commended the efforts of Prince Dapo Abiodun-led administration for the construction and rehabilitation of schools for Special Needs children and the provision of educational materials and equipment to the school, to make learning more conducive for them, adding that the move had greatly improved their well-being and academic performances.

The Head Teacher, who cited some of the projects to include, the rehabilitation of Boys’ Hostel of the school, repair of water and toilet facilities, said, “the hostel has been in a deplorable condition for over a decade while a block of three classrooms was also out of use for many years, not leaving out the repairs carried out”.

Mrs. Olaniyan appealed to the government for the provision of additional wheelchairs for the school, to aid the pupils’ mobility and build their confidence.

In her contribution, a parent of one of the pupils in the school, Mrs. Atinuke Ilori, appreciated the intervention of the State government towards promoting the educational standard and well-being of the learners, particularly those in the school for Special Needs children.
