Popular microblogging platform Twitter has taken down the verification tag from the Twitter handle of Nigeria’s former Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, @ProfOsinbajo.
The verification tag, specifically designed for government officials, had previously been attached to Osinbajo’s account.
However, it has now been removed, leaving only the verification tag intact on the account of the former President, Muhammadu Buhari.
This development comes as Osinbajo and his superior, Buhari, officially handed over power to the new administration led by Bola Tinubu today, May 29, 2023.
As of press time, it remains uncertain why Twitter removed Osinbajo’s verification tag while retaining that of Buhari.
Twitter’s verification system is intended to authenticate the identity of public figures and officials, providing users with a means to discern genuine accounts from fake ones.
