Liverpool legend, Graeme Souness has admitted he has been left stunned by the club’s struggles this season.
He noted that the manager, Jurgen Klopp no longer has a squad capable of finishing top four in the Premier League.
He believes that midfielders such as Thisgo Alcantara, Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and even Harvey Elliott are not contributing much to Jurgen Klopp’s efforts.
Liverpool were beaten 3-1 by Brentford in the Premier League earlier last week, lying sixth in the table, seven points adrift of Manchester United in fourth.
And it has become tougher for the Reds given the news that Virgil van Dijk is set to miss next month’s games with a hamstring injury.
Souness feels the high-octane intensity that has characterised Klopp’s success at Anfield is fast becoming a distant memory.
He feels Klopp should be concerned about the likes of Henderson, Fabinho, Thiago and Elliott.
He told the Daily Mail: “Monday’s 3-1 defeat at Brentford has left Liverpool 16 points off the top. I never would have believed that approaching the halfway stage.
“It is a bit more worrying right now. It does not appear to be a blip, and Jurgen will be feeling that.
“Jurgen said very early on that he did not think they needed anything extra in midfield. I have insisted all along that they did.
“Thiago can’t do the pressing. Jordan Henderson does not have the energy he once did.
“Harvey Elliott would be better coming into a team that is winning. And Fabinho has always been no more than just a steady player for me.”
