In line with the administration's promise to put an end to open defecation, the Ogun State Government has commissioned the first Biogas public toilet.
Commissioning the facility located at the entrance of the Governor’s Office Secretariat, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, the State Head of Service, Dr. Nafiu Aigoro said a clean environment promotes healthy living, saying absence of basic sanitation facilities could result in an unhealthy environment contaminated by human waste.
Aigoro stated that the Prince Dapo Abiodun-led administration was committed to creating a friendly environment, hence the provision of public toilets to ensure that members of staff, especially visitors were able to use modern and conducive toilets.
He commended the ingenuity of the Ministry of Environment in making modern toilets accessible, urging the users to take adequate care of the facility and make personal hygiene their watchword.
In his welcome address, Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Ola Oresanya appreciated the Governor and the partners for making the project possible and assured that government would replicate the facility in all the Local Government Areas in the State, enjoining gas stations, markets and eateries in the State to have a toilet available for the public.
In his remark, the Managing Director, Biofilm Technologies, Mr. Ibukun Taiwo applauded the government for partnering with the firm to unveil the first public toilet with biogas in Nigeria, saying ‘’the gas generated can be used for cooking or power street lights’’.
