Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker says the present government is working towards bringing Primary Health Care (PHC) under one authority, to allow facilities to be run more inclusively by Local Governments for it to be more resourceful.
The move is an adoption of a national policy to reduce disintegration in the delivery of PHC services which involves the integration of all PHC services under one authority with key elements such as a single management body with adequate capacity to control service and especially human and financial resources.
Dr. Coker who revealed this during the 2022 Treasury Board meeting at the Conference Hall, Oba’s Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, added that the step was in line with the directive from the Federal Government, saying the State would provide adequate supervision to ensure the resources were judiciously spent.
She stated that the focus of the Ministry’s proposed budget would be expended on the renovation and upgrade of PHCs, which were being done in phases, procurement of Information and Communication Technology equipment for the implementation of an electronic medical record system, as well as provision of laboratories, borehole water system and electricity supply for better functional health facilities.
Coker, who stated that about 100 PHCs had been renovated, emphasised that the State government intends to provide functional healthcare facilities in all 236 wards, saying it would impact its health indices as a whole.
Responding, the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun said that the government would look into the proposed budget and come up with realistic ways to deliver its mandate in the sector, noting that his administration remained committed to ensuring the provision of qualitative health care to residents irrespective of their locations.
