Accountants in the Ogun State Civil Service should ensure adherence to work ethics as the basis for steering the difficulties in the profession, for the nation to experience the desired economic growth and development.
The Accountant-General of the State and Permanent Secretary, State Treasury, Mr. Babatunde Aregbesola made this known in Abeokuta while delivering a keynote address at the 2022 edition of International Accounting Day with the theme, "Recommendations on how to Navigate the Complexities of the Accounting Profession in the Civil Service" organised by the Accountants' Forum in the Ogun State Civil Service.
Mr. Aregbesola said the Day offers an opportunity for Accountants in the Service to cross-fertilise ideas and strengthen the relationship among colleagues, to enable people to appreciate their contributions, make businesses thrive, support the economy and help the government to navigate the challenges of finance.
The Accountant-General said, “it is required of practitioners to be creative and flexible in the discharge of their duties for efficient service delivery”.
Delivering a lecture on the theme, a former Accountant-General in the State, Pastor Oluseye Senfuye, said Accountants play four prominent roles in Civil Service which are budget and budgetary forecast, accounting revenue, expenditure reporting and debt management.
Pastor Senfuye said Accountants in the Civil Service are expected to provide robust budget information, provide adequate financial information, plan strategic policy to undertake financial assumption, ensure recording of adequate data on government expenditure, payment systems in capital and recurrent expenditures, among others.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Chairman of the forum in the State Civil Service, Mr. Saka Ajao said many people do not recognise the work of an accountant until when they need money or encounter any financial issues, adding that the International Accounting Day was meant to appreciate the practitioners of the noble profession, celebrate and spur them to do more with integrity.
In their separate goodwill messages, former Permanent Secretaries in the State Civil Service who were members of the Forum, Messers. Olumuyiwa Olukoga and Olukunle Sodeinde, emphasised the importance of training and retraining for Accountants in the Civil Service to excel in their profession, urging them to be versatile in their profession.
