The Chairman, Yewa South Local Government in Ogun State, Hon. Lateef Salami, has urged teachers to impart knowledge that would abolish tribalism and ethnicity.
The Chairman, who gave the advice today while playing host to the teachers and pupils of Excellence Jewels Nursery and Primary school in his office at Ilaro on the occasion of this year's Teachers Day and celebration of Nigeria's’s 62nd Independence anniversary, said winning the war against tribalism was a necessary condition to tackle the twin challenges of hunger and insecurity.
He implored teachers not to relent in inculcating good morals in their students, which according to him would engender peaceful and harmonious relationships among people of different ethnic groups in various communities in the country.
According to him, "what we need in this country is to abolish all tendencies making citizens define themselves based on tribes; and that is why I will implore you the teachers to please impart on your students' knowledge that will abolish tribalism and ethnicity.
"If we can't solve the problem of tribal differences, we can't solve security issues. The insurgency challenge arises from our tribal differences and the way we have become too conscious of this. When we have been able to solve the challenge of tribal differences, leading to resolving security issues, we would then have agricultural produce in abundance as there would no longer be security issues such as herdsmen menace, cattle rustling among others".
Hon. Salami while congratulating the teachers on the occasion of the year 2022 Teachers' Day, assured that his administration would always provide a conducive environment needed to enhance effective teaching and learning.
Speaking earlier, the proprietress of the School, Mrs. Modupe Salako appreciated the LG boss and management of the council for the warm reception accorded them, pointing out that the school was out to clean the host community and the Local Government Secretariat as part of their corporate social responsibility to celebrate Teachers' Day and 62nd Independence anniversary of the country.
