Pensioners in Ogun State have been assured that government would find possible ways to ensure payment of their retirement benefits and other demands, to ameliorate their pains, despite the dwindling federal allocation.
Secretary to Ogun State Government, Mr. Tokunbo Talabi, gave the assurance while addressing a group of pensioners, who staged a protest rally at the Governor's office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, saying government would meet with the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) next week to proffer practicable solutions to their lingering demands.
He explained that the Prince Dapo Abiodun-led administration had a lot to deal with, with the lean purse, adding that the financial ingenuity adopted by the present government in raising its Internally Generated Revenue had assisted in keeping the State afloat.
According to the SSG, ‘’the resources available to the State is increasing progressively, its financial burdens are increasing geometrically due to economic challenges confronting the nation as a whole. The present administration is empathetic toward pensioners’ situation and will always take its words as it is bonded. We will not promise what we can not do or promise to do all at a time, we are not such government’’.
Earlier, the Chairman of NUP, Ogun State Chapter, Comrade Waheed Oloyede said they had to stage the protest at the Governor's office, to press home their demands since they have not heard from the government after it set up a Committee on Consequential Adjustment and Pensions Increase two months ago.
Oloyede said the Union wants the government to take action towards addressing the plights of the senior citizens by promptly attending to the delay in payment of their monthly pensions, arrears of gratuity, and consequential pensions adjustment, among others.
