IMPORTANCE OF EFFECTIVE CUSTOMER SERVICE RELATIONS HIGHLIGHTED

Effective customer service relations and good interpersonal skills have been identified as critical qualities public servants should possess in the course of implementing government policies and programmes.

The Accountant of Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS), Ogun State Ministry of Transportation, Mr. Kayode Kuyoro, made this known while speaking on a topic: "Customer Service and Interpersonal Skills" during an in-house training for Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Kuyoro, said Public Officers were in a vantage position to create a good image for their respective organisations, which would engender an increase in patronage and revenue generation for the government, adding that it was essential to be active listeners to avoid misunderstandings with members of the public.

He submitted that ‘’interpersonal skills are required to effectively communicate, interact, and work with individuals and groups. It is expedient for Public Officers to show good verbal and non-verbal interpersonal skills in the discharge of their duties to have a positive image in public’’.

Also speaking, the Deputy Director, VIS in the Ministry, Engr. Adewale Ogundele, during his lecture at the training titled: "Driving Signs and Road Traffic with Regards to Obtaining a Driver’s License", reminded the participants to display a high level of discipline while on duty to command the desired respect from motorists, which he said would eliminate road crashes most times.

In his contribution, the State Coordinator of Driver Theory Test (DTT), Mr. Peter Daramola, who spoke on "Work Ethics and Code of the Driver’s Theory Test", emphasised the significance of adherence to the rules and regulations of an organisation, adding that the computer-based theory test had removed certain bottlenecks associated with the analogue ways of handling the examination.

Appreciating the Ministry for the training, Engr. Babatunde Sorunke, who spoke on behalf of other participants, promised that the VIOs would apply the knowledge gained to improve their service delivery.
