Former Liverpool striker, Michael Owen has insisted that Jurgen Klopp’s side will challenge Manchester City for the English Premier League title this season despite their inconsistent start to the new campaign.
Owen said this after Liverpool defeated Ajax 2-1 in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
Liverpool pushed champions Manchester City all the way in 2021-2022, only missing out on the top spot by a point after a dramatic final day.
However, after six matches of the new season, the Reds are already five points behind Pep Guardiola’s side and six behind early leaders Arsenal.
But Owen believes Liverpool’s latest win over Ajax, thanks to Joel Matip’s 89th-minute goal, will give the Anfield club a platform to build on.
“They have had an average start,” Owen said on BT Sport. “In the league, you don’t want to be giving Manchester City a head start, but it is nothing they cannot recover from.
“You don’t turn into a bad team overnight. They will be back but need to do it before teams get away from them.”
